Charlestown, New Hampshire Students of the 1880's-90's

Some years ago my mother handed down some old photos to me that had been handed down to her by her three aunts Grace, Jennie and Kate LORD (Frank LORD is their brother). I just love old photos, especially if they are family! My father was in the Air Force and we were stationed over in Germany for the better part of our childhood years so my brother and I didn't grow up around aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents. This is one reason I treasure family photos of all the family that I never got to know.

I'm hoping in sharing these old school photos and the names written on back that maybe others out there that don't have copies or ANY photos of these ancestors might enjoy them as much as I do.

Two old schoolhouse photos handed down by my mom's great aunts (LORD's).

To start off with I'll share a photo of the old school house in Charlestown, it looks so quaint and such a far cry from the huge schools and classes of today:

This first says "the first school the Lord children went to in Charlestown,NH".
This must have been an early school as in 1870 the family was in VT, their first child was born 1873 in Charlestown, NH, other children in 1874, 1876 & 1879,and they are there in the 1880 census. Then by the 1900 census they are in Framingham, MA.

This second photo says "Hi School in Charlestown,NH" on the back.

The first photo is of Mr Goddard's class, it is a High School class, and I'm sorry the students aren't all named like the other photos, but perhaps someone will recognize an ancestor.

The next class is Miss Hurd's class, it's an Intermediate School class and does have the names written on the back as well as some updates on them and I've written them out below as well. Sorry no year on this one either, but I know my LORD's left Charlestown in the late 1890's- early 1900's for Framingham,Massachusetts.

  1. Lisa, I just had to write to you and "Thank You" for posting this! I grew up in Charlestown and moved to VT, after high school, in 1980. I came across this blog today, via a Google image search of Charlestown NH. I actually know where the old school house is, although I do not personally know any of the students. I did want to tell you though, I have "shared" this blog on the "If you grew up in Charlestown NH, what do you remember?" FB page. Several people have already viewed, liked and made comments, regarding this blog! Thank you so much for sharing!

    1. Martha, thank you for your kind words and for sharing my first attempt at a blog, I mainly wanted to share photos and names as I know that many people do not have early photos of ancestors. I'm sorry that I did not see your note until now, my mom had just passed away when you wrote this, these LORDs were her family. Luckily, I have many old photos handed down through her family, I haven't even gotten through them all yet :)

  2. Have you seen the Charlestown Histories? There are three, now, but if you want to know more about your ancestors, they are really very detailed. My dad worked on the latest one. I think what you would be looking for would be in the First one, by George Olcutt. I have all three. But if you were to ask the Charlestown Historical Society they might lend you one. I live in Maine now. Betsey Conant Clark

    1. Betsey,
Thank you for your note, I never saw it either I guess.... ODD but 2014-2016 were rough years with my parents both passing away and so much to take care of.
I have seen some Charlestown History online in books etc. but haven't actually read actual books yet.
I did get some information from the Charlestown Historical Society.
